Day 33: Wrightwood Zero

Here’s a short update from my zero day in Wrightwood!

I woke up dead tired in my twin hostel bed, which told me that I really needed the rest. I cannot believe that I thought I would only have one night in town. I started organizing my gear and doing laundry pretty soon after getting up, just to get it out of the way. The hostel was really cozy and super clean!! I’d never stayed in one before so I think this sets the bar pretty high for future hostel visits.

My first stop out of the house was to the Village Grind, a coffee shop that gives free drip coffee to PCT hikers. It was so wonderful. I caught up on blog posts while enjoying coffee. I journal every night on trail, or at least try to take notes on the highlights, and then use the time in town with WiFi to format the posts and add pictures. It’s fun to have some time to look over the week and reflect on everything I’ve done. I’m very committed to keeping up with the blog, because without it, I think the days would melt together and I’d forget so many moments.

Clare and I resupplied, and we got a free PCT pin from the hardware store! Wrightwood is so incredibly hiker friendly!

Wrightwood is such a sweet town. Everything was walking distance and people were so welcoming to hikers.

After getting my food for the week, I took care of odds and ends back at the hostel, including successfully find the leak in my sleeping pad.

Once my chores were done, I followed the sound of the live music that I could hear from my window back to the coffee shop, where a band was jamming out. I got a glass of wine and enjoyed the last few songs of their set. I’m so grateful that I got to catch live music again while in town!!

Anytime I can listen to music in town is such a treat!!

I hung out with my friends at their AirBnb for the rest of night, listening to music and chilling out. There were a bunch of yard sales in Wrightwood this weekend, and Rory found a foot spa for one dollar at one of them. Everyone was taking turns soaking their feet. Turns out, the box said it was made in 1987! It was unbelievable that it still worked so well. I got a huge kick out of that.

Sandra made a delicious curry dinner, which was so filling and wholesome. After helping with cleanup, I headed back to my hostel for an early night before trail tomorrow.

I loved this home-cooked meal!!!

Last week was great hiking with a small group, so I’m both excited and nervous to be with everyone else again. I’m looking forward to this next section, since I’ll be so close to LA! I’m feeling good!! I’ll be climbing Mount Baden-Powell tomorrow which is so exciting. I’m looking forward to the amazing views and getting a huge sense of accomplishment from bagging that peak!!

My town fit!! I bought a dress for a couple dollars at a yard sale. I’ll be leaving it behind in a hiker box for someone else to wear. Having non-hiking clothes for a day is an underrated luxury.
